Looking for a cool place for good food, friendly service, and an awesome atmosphere? Check out Small Wonder….
While working on this blog, a colleague and I stumbled upon one of Oakland’s hidden gems. A restaurant / lounge/ bar/ and cafe with amazing food and cool ambiance.
From the outside, most of us may have walked by and presumed that the storefront was an antique shop or nursery.
A Unique Place to Visit
Small Wonder is unusual in that it does not have a website or a phone number and the owner mainly seeks to create relationships with individuals in ways that strengthen connections without relying on the use of technology. Of course, there are many electrical outlets available for those who bring their laptops, but most patrons visit Small Wonder for the food, service, atmosphere, and ambiance. We spent several hours there eating and working, and yet, there was never any pressure to finish up and move along. Since it was a Friday, we did notice how many people kept entering as we were just about to leave at about 6pm.
Basically, upon entering the restaurant / lounge, one instantly notices the decor. It’s a mix of cool modern surprises (i.e. the bathroom hand washing station), the large traditional sofa chairs, the sparkling hanging snowflakes, and the large collection of alcohol bottles which decorate the bar. Inside, you will probably be greeted by the friendly bar tender and shown a menu. We ordered our food at the cashier and then went upstairs to charge our computers while we waited for our food.
I ordered the fish tacos which were delicious and my colleague was just as pleased with his roasted chicken. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious.
Instantly, I knew that I wanted to Small Wonder in a blog post because eating there was a fun experience that I instantly wanted to share with my friends.
Right in downtown Oakland, Small Wonder is a hidden gem that is perfect as a fun and relaxing place to meet friends and hand out talking. Live music plays on certain nights so I definitely plan on returning to check out the entertainment.
Visiting Small Wonder is not only an experience for the food, but also for the friendliness of the staff. I can’t wait to go back and try one of the other dishes. Don’t forget to check out the unique sink and faucet before leaving.
